Hi, I'm Jarek and I build LocalCan app (https://www.localcan.com/). Here is the story and my learnings:
Be your own audience
I got an idea for LocalCan™ that solves pain points of setting up a local development environment, which I experienced myself.
Trust your gut, don’t overthink, and launch fast
During a rainy holiday in Greece, I built a landing page with ONE screen of the app designed in Figma and a Pre-order button linking to Lemon Squeezy checkout. The disclaimer said, estimated release in 2 months.
1st launch - Twitter. Be part of a community
I posted it on Twitter and got the first few pre-orders. The next day, I got lucky as it was retweeted by Tony Dinh , Shayan, Dan Rowden, and others. This resulted in the first $1k of pre-orders, yay!
Do beta testing or be prepared to fail and pivot
The next month, I was busy building the app. I shipped fast and… failed fast! I skipped beta testing and shipped straight to all people who pre-ordered. The first feedback was "It doesn’t work!", "I think I don’t get it", and the panic mode was on.
Have skills and deliver
In just one week, I added a feature that almost everyone was expecting - a reverse proxy that allowed them to totally forget about configuring server certificates or port numbers. I shipped it, and fine-tuned it after receiving more feedback. People were happy, and after deep down, I was up again!
2nd launch - Product Hunt: When you are confident about your product
The Product Hunt community is welcoming, and it’s always a joy to launch there. I got 1.5k visits and around $500 in sales, reaching 6th place on that day. I tweeted 3x on that day to promote the launch, so again community helps a lot!
3rd launch - Hacker News. If your product is for developers
LocalCan was on the main page for 2 days and got over 100 comments, resulting in 6k website views and around $500 in sales. My server CPU was at 90% during peak time despite being a static Next.js site 🔥
Hacker News is weird. Feels like a site from 1996, with many developers and Linux users there. Comments could be harsh, so be sure your product is good, and you are thick-skinned.
Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!
Thanks for sharing great lessons, Jarek Ceborski!
Thanks Syed! 💪🤍
