NYC, Where are the Indie Hackers?

Finance, sales, and more finance are the focus of NYC. Which you probably know already if you've been here at all.

I'm hitting my 1 year mark of living in Manhattan, and while it's been great, I still rarely run into people building things.

So. You're an indie hacker. You probably live or have been in NY a while since you're reading this. Have you met a lot of builders around here? Is this a side effect of covid, or is it just how it is?

heads up — i live here and i'll be hosting an in-person meetup in nyc in just a couple weeks (haven't settled on a specific day yet)! word on the street is @csallen is also visiting from seattle.

ahhh that'd be amazing! i'm already surprised to hear from other replies that there are indie hackers here. so it looks like there would be demand for an IH meet up 👍

I've been in NYC for 15 years (originally from Sweden) and have been part of a number of co-working and incubators over the years. Most recently I was a Betaworks in Meatpacking and before that at the Art/Tech incubator NEW INC.

As @big213 already mentioned it's hard to meet people who are actually in the process of building stuff, perhaps it's a result of expensive office/co-working rents and people trying to reduce costs in the early stage of building.

Do you think it's "reasonable" to not be out because you're building something? I kind of do the same thing, but go back and forth on whether meeting more people is helpful when you're building something.

I do believe the best way to grow your startup is growing yourself, I'm just not sure on what the best ways of doing that is yet.

I've been in NYC for the last 3 years. It has its ups and downs 😆 I mostly dislike it except for the fact that you can find many cool people (like IH members here).

There used to be a pretty regular meetup before COVID. We need to renew that tradition.

I've lived in NYC all my life! I think it's about what part of NYC you're in. Sure there's finance and wall street, but there's also big tech companies with offices in NY. I work at a big tech company and almost everyone at work is building something on the side or just for fun.

Also as a side, a lot of builders and devs I know are just building from home.

i definitely see where having that group from your full time company would help. i'm also in big tech but it doesn't have the entrepreneural spirit sadly.

Building from home is the current setup for me too! 🚀

About once a month, I get a couple of NYC indie hackers together to chat about our products over beers. If you'd like to join the next one, DM me on Twitter @foliofed!

that's awesome! i sent a DM, appreciate the invite.

Been living in Manhattan for a few months so far, and my experience has been similar. I'd say that, in general, catching a builder in the act of building is pretty rare. Sure, there are plenty of people thinking about building stuff, and then there's people who have concluded building stuff, either due to having given up or finished building whatever they wanted to build. And then there's the fact that the people building stuff are probably too occupied doing that to be out and about. So, you combine all these factors, and you realize that people building things are an elusive bunch. But they are out there, I guess you just have to know where to look.

Just sent you an email btw, feel free to connect!

I noticed this a lot at technical meet ups I went to last summer. Lots of great smart people but I only ran into one who had built or been building something.

The winter makes going out and meeting new people even more hard, so I took a break between then. It's easy to convince myself I'm building a bootstrapped thing so I really have need to meet people like I would when fundraising. But meeting indie hackers is fun, and I'm in NY so there's no reason not to.

So as this post is already hinting at, I think finding others around NY will be easier this summer :)

*sent ya an email back 📧

I lived in NYC for a few months in 18/19, and loved it!
Anyway, I was wondering the same recently: not running into indie makers in my country. My solution was to turn to Twitter. I scraped all users related to #buildinpublic, and filtered for location. Now, at least I found 100+ users close to me, and already made connections and had opportunities.
If you're interested I could make a list filtered on NYC for you

Ahh Amsterdam looks like it'd a great spot too! (almost moved there instead of NY during pandemic).

That's a pretty cool idea, yeah I'd be interested to the list for nyc even though I might have lucked out based on the responses so far 👀 It'd be fun to know who's around!

You need to make this into a product like @jakobgreenfeld does 🔥

          1. 2

Yeah I might do it… what kind of product does he have ?

            1. 2

Many different ones, but this is an example that I meant specifically: https://productexplorer.io
