How would you invest $1000?

You're an indie hacker and have spare $1000 to invest. How would you do it?

Depends when you need that money next and how much mental load you want to take on with managing it after the initial investment.

If 10+ years and low mental load, just invest in a low expense ratio ETF (I prefer VOO or VUG).

If 2-5 years and medium mental load, you could spend time researching and thinking about stocks in industries you have an advantage in (i.e. tech) and pick 1-3 companies you really believe in long term (some of my picks: MSFT, ABNB, U).

If <1 year, just put it in a high yield savings account, not worth risking money you actually need to spend in the near future.

      This is the best answer.

Honestly for OP, if you're going to ask on a non-investment related forum here like IH where to park your money, let's make it really simple: when would you need to access the money?

If you can do without it for the forseeable future, throw it into VOO (s&p500), or VTSAX (tracks the whole market). A significant chunk of my own investments are parked in these two.

If you need it sooner, high yield savings account. The returns will more than likely be extremely small, but you won't have any drawdown risk.

Investing is a tricky game. A lot of people will put their money into a specific asset, and get extremely upset when they experience a drawdown.

Then they sell, the asset makes a recovery, and they feel even worse.

This is one of the biggest reasons some of the most well known investors (Thiel, Buffet, Cuban) suggest that you need to put your investments in companies that you believe in - because that confidence will help you endure the emotional toll you experience when a drawdown occurs.

I created an app to help with investing.

    Company 360: Find undervalued stocks
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/company-360/id1464857130

Greatest asset in stock investing is knowledge. Investors using Company 360 research app can do a better estimate of a company's stock price and profit from buying and selling.

    Currently available on iOS AppStore.

I'm biased towards crypto but I'd buy Ethereum and hold. Not a financial advice in any way, of course, but big things are ahead for Ethereum with 2.0 in the horizon.

This is an interesting question, and I am sure that many people would invest this money differently. But personally, I invested about $ 600 in stocks and the rest of the money in cryptocurrency. But before investing money, I would like to gain more knowledge in the field of investing. I regularly read articles about this, gaining a little knowledge and confidence. And probably soon, I will invest my savings in cryptocurrency and perhaps a small part in real estate. I will not invest millions in real estate, but I can get a few percent of the project's profits.

It depends on what you want to achieve and how much energy you would like to invest. Actually, they say the best investment is to study and create your network. So I would find some (offline) course and invest into it to meet new people and learn new skills.

If you have some project in mind, this budget can help you generate the first traction. Without knowing the information, I would use it for marketing.

If you want to invest, not build your company, then take a look at the @jkchu's comment (this one: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-would-you-invest-1000-08f2a9d475?commentId=-Mzkyr9LJj5bMMFbzhRk) :)

And if you do want to create a company and at the same time save money for learning, check our course about growing a company the scalable way: https://spacetime.ooo/scalable-digital-strategy-for-lean-managers/ 🙂

I don't think a one-time investment of $1000 is that helpful. At least not if you invest in stocks, ETFs, or anything like that. I would invest the money in myself or in my businesses. Depending on your situation, you can take a class, buy books, spend it on advertising, or anything else that will provide a greater benefit. However, if you plan to invest regularly, then I would invest in an ETF or something riskier like stocks depending on your level of knowledge.

🔄 If you constantly have $1000 to invest, I'd go into $TSLA. It's likely to be the biggest company in the world in 10 years.

1️⃣ If you only have 1 shot, I'd yolo into some low-market cap cryptos

Where would you invest it Molly?

I would invest it in design. I think it's where you get the best value for money. One hour of design time can save 100 hours of coding.

I would invest in S&P 500 or VWCE on 10 years minimum.

I would buy some online courses, books, and audiobooks and learn.

I would invest it in my business. More specifically, I would buy products from other indie hackers to help with my business (such as tools) or buy products/services that help my followers and do give aways.

I take all my crypto gains and convert half or more of my gains to USDC then stake that for 10% interest and use the interest payments to buy things. So far it has worked out well for me.

I invest it in my education. I’d put about 250 into video a course or two and spend the remaining 750 on books. I’d mostly focus on improving my technical skills, online marketing and design.

Doing this for the last few years has completely changed my financial situation and I’m now spending multiple thousands a year on all of the above, newsletters and now even some multi-thousand $ courses.

The key question is your time horizon. If you’re investing for 3 years vs. 30 years you would choose very different investments. For a long horizon, I would invest in in the VT ETF, which is an index fund that tracks the stock market of the entire world.

Very overpriced now compared to 40 years ago.
