🎉 Got my 1st paying customer from my newsletter 🎉

Yesterday was a big day. I just launched my 1st newsletter and got my 1st paying customer straight from the newsletter.

The numbers aren't big, but the newsletter performance is motivating:

  • 135 subscribers
  • 48.89% open rate
  • 2.96% CTR
  • 1.00% Conversion to paid (1 sale)

The Bootstrapped Way Newsletter performance

I've also created a dedicated landing page and added a screenshot from the latest (1st) newsletter www.thebootstrappedway.com/newsletter

I'm not sure if it's worth the effort to keep everything on my platform or switch to Substack. 🤔

The first customer gives you dopamine to get more and more. I still remember the feeling of getting me first project.

    1. 1

yeah, although this is not my first customer, this is my 1st sale coming from something that I haven't done before, newsletter. :D

    Congrats!!

That is an outstanding open rate. ~49% is nothing to sneeze at!

    1. 1

thanks a lot, indeed, it's looking promising 😁

  3. 1

Nice! You're running this all on your own platform??

noup @stuhacker, I'm using Systeme.io ... although it has some drawbacks, I love it. I mean, what is not to love when you get website/funnel builder + email marketing + newsletter + blog + affiliate, all built-in for $228/year?

      1. 1

ahh makes sense... was gonna say that would be crazy. Systeme seems powerful.

Why would you switch to Substack? I just started my own newsletter a few weeks ago (shameless plug) and ruled it out because I find that you can't be as flexible with customizing the look/feel of the emails.

        1. 1

you're missing the same thing I'm missing, the option to preview the latest newsletter 😁
there are two things that I like at Substack:

          1. the option to see the previous newsletter before signing up (this reduces bad fit, it also reduces the unsubscribe rate)
          2. check out this comment below saying that 18% of his subscribers came through Substack's recommendation system

oh that's super cool, didn't know they had such a powerful rec system - thanks for the pointer! And good luck with the NL, just subbed :). The software I use has the ability to show last post, I just haven't set it up yet

Hi Daniel, Congrats. I just joined the site and I'm excited to explore more and maybe one announce a happy post like you ;)

    1. 2

great to have you with us, @emadk 🤗

I'm definitely not a good writer. I strongly believe in and count on the sync between the audience and the value my product offers. People are just too busy and can't read hundreds of articles and tweets, hoping they'll learn something.

An Airtable database or a newsletter with bite-sized insights is crazy helpful these days with soo much noise.

Congrats, Daniel, this is quite something!
Although 1.00% is the conversion rate from all subscribers to sales, your true conversion rate is 25% because you had 4 clicks in the end.
So 4 people have read your newsletter, and 1 of them has paid, right?

    1. 1

yes, you're right, if we're looking at it as a funnel, the conversion rate is 25%, not 1%
though I feel that's a little bit click-bait to say 25% conversion rate for a newsletter

  6. 1

Congratulations! What's the price for advertisement on your newsletter? You may have found your second paying customer.

    1. 1

thanks, @Ormosis ... I'm not monetizing the newsletter besides my own products for the moment, at least until I reach '000 subscribers.

let's connect and keep in touch, in the near future, I'm planning on adding a dedicated section with links to related digital/info products.

  7. 1

That's great to know. Just subscribed.

Almost 48% open rate is damn good, in my opinion. What do you think the reason is?

And is this some product you are selling or a service?

    1. 1

thanks, @heyaliraza ... a high open rate usually means a good subject line ... besides that, all 135 of those subscribers have opted-in to receive a $1 version of the database (with limited information), so the content of the newsletter is highly relevant for them.

    Yesssss!!! Congratulations @danielpirciu!!
    I have a brand new newsletter as well (~ 4 month old) - https://freshsalmon.substack.com/

    1. 1

thanks, @vikxo ... Q1: have you used Substack from the start of you switched from another platform?
Q2: having your newsletter on Substack, does it help with getting more subscribers?

      1. 1

I switched from Revue (Twitter company) to Substack, but very early, immediately after publishing the first post.

Substack does have something called Substack Network and Recommendations. Anytime anyone subscribes to someone's newsletter, they also are shown the newsletters read and recommended by the person whom you are subscribing. So, it's a credibility to viral effect play. I have gotten ~18% of subscribers from Substack Network.

My understanding is - the more your newsletter grows the more your recommendation reach grows. This is why it is actually such an awesome platform for people with already existing following/email list...
