Builder Wars: A New Hope

Hi There,

I'm Mehdy and this is my first post on Indie Hackers :) Actually, it's an amazing story, how I got here.

TL;DR This is my (kinda) dramatic story of starting fresh, with a goal and, committed.

I'm a software engineer and I've been dreaming of starting my own business for many years now. I've tried (or TBH failed) to develop a side project. Even now I'm embarrassed about it.

Anywho, I've been playing with twitter's API lately to come up with an idea and I was thinking about some sort of helper dashboard to provide a bunch of analytics to help you grow your network.

The day before yesterday I was scrolling through HackerNews and this post caught my eyes. I opened it and saw what a beautiful product Tony has built. Black Magic is a Twitter analytics tool far much better than what I was hoping to come up with.

Honestly, I was a little bit jealous and upset with myself that why couldn't I think of that? Why couldn't I build something like this? I stopped what I was doing since I found a better one. I looked through Tony's webpage and saw Indie Hackers :)

I was so happy for a moment that I've found here and really bumped that I couldn't join without an invitation code :)) I couldn't let it go so I asked the one friend I knew he'd have one :D

Finally, I joined Indie Hackers but I was still upset and lost. What should I work on next? I had no ideas! I noticed the How I Went from Indie Lurker to Indie Hacker title at the top of the "Start Here" page. And boy, the "Stop trying to come up with a genius idea." part hit me hard! I was shocked how I've missed such a simple lesson all these years!

To sum up, I'm so grateful that I've found this amazing place and full of amazing people. I'm going to continue exploring and finally build something that it's not a new idea :)

I'm aiming for $1K MRR by the end of 2022 and I'm committing to posting an update here (Weekly Updates group) on my journey every week.

Thank you for reading it and making me believe it's possible again :)

@tonydinh Although I'm embarrassed about publicly saying that I was jealous of you, I think I need to thank you for your excellent work that helped me get here :)
