Tips for Working from Home while in Isolation

  • If you have kids, involve them in your work somehow. This could be as easy as printing something off and let them cut it out or glueing something together etc., to keep them occupied. This can be easier when you aren't flat out, but always remind them that if the phone rings then mum/dad need them to be quiet... always keps to keep some snacks in your draw for when this happens :)

  • Keep regular work hours, this includes breaks. Take the opportunity to get out of the house for a walk, bake some bread... start a cult.. whatever is going to take your mind of the work for a little bit.

  • Don't snack all day. It's very easy to just eat rubbish at your desk all day now that you are closer to your own pantry... and you have some sweet sweet snacks.... I like snacks.

  • If you are isolating with a loved one make sure you both have lunch together... always good to have someone to talk to.

  • Keep in contact with work colleagues, friends and family during the day. Working from home, especially alone, can be hard so make sure you have someone to talk to... If you aren't fortunate to have someone to talk to then make your own friend out of a sock... maybe call him Gerald... Gerald can be a bit of a handful though, and always JUDGES ME, so make sure you watch what you say around him and always lock him away at night so that he doesn't steal your potatoes!

    A couple more tips:

    • Rest your eyes during calls. Take some calls with no video and just close your eyes for an hour.
    • Write it down. Take notes on paper.
    • Don't work through low energy. Make sure to feed yourself properly but also learn to read your own energy levels.
    • Make time for Deep work. Close off your calendar for at least 2 hours a day. Even if you're a manager.
    • Schedule calls for 25 minutes and 55 minutes on your calendar. Make time to get to your next call.
