I'm launching three podcasts at once... here's how... and why!

I figure it can’t be too much more work to launch three.

There’s a lot I want to say, and there’s probably no one on Earth, other than me, who’s interested in all of it.

So I’m launching three podcasts to three communities:

  • Tangled Web to the Indie Hacker community
  • The Quit Work Podcast to the FIRE community (though this one will interest the Indie Hacker community too)
  • The Last Theory to the physics community

(Any IH physicists on FIRE out there? Subscribe to all three!)

And all three are video as well as audio... and two of them are newsletters/blogs too.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. Name – if what you’re talking about is unique, you’ll be able to think of a name that’s unique
  2. Domain – ditto
  3. Studio – the quietest corner of my basement, with a bed and curtains to absorb the echos
  4. Equipment – don’t spend any time or money on this! your laptop/phone camera/mic are fine, though I admit that I have a Blue Yeti mic, which is OK after noise cancellation
  5. Hosting – let me save you some time here: use the excellent Transistor for audio [from $19/month, transistor.fm] from @mijustin, and YouTube, obviously, for video
  6. Recording – again, let me save you some time: if you’re doing 2+ person interviews, use the excellent Riverside [from $9/month, riverside.fm]
  7. Editing – Riverside automates basic audio/video editing in a way that will save you untold hours; otherwise, Audacity for audio [free, www.audacityteam.org] and DaVinci Resolve for video [free, www.blackmagicdesign.com/ca/products/davinciresolve/]
  8. Website – Transistor will set you up with a basic website, though I admit I developed my own with Snap.svg for animation [free, snapsvg.io] and Laravel Forge for PHP hosting [from $12/month, forge.laravel.com]

That’s it. Transistor does the rest for you, e.g. publishing to Spotify, Apple Podcasts, etc.

Beyond that, all you need is something to say.

If you’re interesed in my podcasts, you can find them by searching in your podcast player for:

Thanks for using Transistor to host your podcasts! (Having the ability to host multiple podcasts was a key reason we created it)

Listening to the Tangled Web trailer now!

Thanks Justin! Transistor has been flawless. I did take a good look at the alternatives, but they weren’t as simple or slick, and didn’t have such straightforward pricing, e.g. as you say, hosting more than one podcast pushed you to a higher price. Thanks for creating such a smooth experience!
