What are your predictions for 2021?

@csallen is predicting the best indie hacker companies will be building tools to support the creator community.

My personal and niche prediction, is on (community) digital gardens and community of practices becoming of more importance. (I'm personally totally geeking out on this for at least the next year).

Where do you think 2021 will be heading?

  1. 5

Shopify plugins business will most likely explode in 2021.

Even though it's a crowded marketplace, there are only ~3000 Shopify plugins (https://bit.ly/2MccFPs), as compared to something like Chrome extensions with 188k

    1. 1

I'd say it's already exploding. There are over 5000 apps in the Shopify App Store. Around 40-50 new apps being published each week.

  2. 4

    my prediction:

    • we’ll see a large community boom! Yay! We like communities 📈

    • this community boom will realize that communities take work, which will cause for more abandoned communities 📉

    • the need for the community gardener, someone who will need to foster, grow, and build authentic relationships will rise 📈

    • community gardener roles will become more important to establishing trust in news/media organizations, and can be a way to fight mis/dis/mal information!

    i'm writing a post titled:

the rise of the community copycat

... this isn't pejorative, but, it is my major prediction.

  4. 2

Remote work has already risen, but it is going to explode in 2021. Many possibilities for indie hackers to make stuff here:

    1. The good old Job Board (but please innovate...)
    2. Solve problems around the logistics of hiring remotely
    3. Remote work tools
    4. Remote lifestyle tools
    1. 1

Do you have any innovative ideas for job boards? Just curious.

      1. 1

I haven't spent time thinking about this, but I think perhaps there is room for innovation if we could mix two or more ideas. For instance, I think a typical job board that solves point 2 (logistics of hiring remotely) is very valuable to hiring teams.

I can see folks commenting their niche will be the trend. May become real or folks are just promoting their niche.

Generally, it'll be more harder, in some cases more easier, more sub categories to be discovered and more content will be put out by content creators on defined niches (which brings us back to Allen's prediction).

  6. 1

A big boom in biotechnology companies (using some of Deepmind/Alphafolds discoveries) and more psychedelic companies getting funded (look at Peter Thiel last 125M$ investment in Atai).

    1. 1

Right now it goes brrr, but in 2021? Most likely will drop.

      1. 1

        I disagree.

Last bitcoin bull run in 2017 was powered by lots of FUD and scam ICOs.

This one is fueled by a lot of institutional investors buying in.

  7. 1

I agree with both of you.

    • example like this one https://www.usestir.com/ show the huge interest in that field.
    • online communities will replace IRL because COVID is far from over. Even before that, the majority of people bellow 25 were spending more time online meeting people than IRL. It's just a natural evolution.
