What hosting solution do you recommend for Wordpress blog + landing page?

Hey Indie Folks!

I am confused what hosting (shared/managed/vps) to use.
I would like to host blog and landing page with paywall very soon after 🤞.

I am mobile developer so I believe I could handle setting it on DigitalOcean, but I don't want to spend redundant hours on it. I do not have admin experience and I am also not aware what problems can I encounter with this route.

I am afraid of high costs of managed hosting. Plans that include multiple WP instances feels not justified for sites that earn that earn nothing.

I am probably overthinking this ☺️

What would you recommend for me?

    Hi Wiktor!

Your use case sounds reasonably straightforward if you're reasonably familiar with Linux. DigitalOcean and Vultr both have one-click installs for WordPress. A single VPS will handle a significant amount of traffic, though might struggle if you hit the front page of HackerNews or Reddit.

Shared hosting has some benefits: they should take care of OS and package updates and often offer other features like email forwarding. In terms of shared hosting I've used Dreamhost for years without problems for low-traffic websites. It also has a one-click installer for WordPress while also having a control panel for email forwarding and email hosting.

(Somewhat shameless plug/discussion about static sites) After a WordPress site that a relative of mine was running got hacked I started working on a product, WP Stoic, that would handle the WordPress part of your use case (though not the paywall part). Like Strattic and HardyPress it to turns WordPress into a static site generator. You edit the site as normal through WordPress, then deploy a static copy of the site to a CDN from within the WordPress admin panel. If that is of interest, let me know and I'll get you access when I get the MVP out the door :)

      Hey Karl!

I appreciate your input. I decided to try Cloudways for now, just to have benefits of vps and be offloaded with some maintenance tasks.

I am not aware what problems I may encounter with pure "wordpress", but I've chosen it to not reinvent the wheel, so I rejected static sites.
But I like the idea, and could probably use it for a business-card-page. If you would like to have any feedback from a noob, feel free to reach me :)

      And 🤞for your project!

Cloudways looks like a great option too. Worth picking something to just get started. I'll remember them next time someone is in the market for managed WordPress.

The security problems with a regular WordPress site would be encountered due to lack of management (vulnerable plugins, old WordPress versions). In my relative's case her site got hacked due to a vulnerable quiz/contact form plugin. Or scaling problems due to having a single webserver running Webserver, WordPress, mySQL PHP etc and it becomes overwhelmed under heavy load.

A static site hosted on a CDN avoids both of these problems, but it's certainly a niche for a certain kind of site.

Will get in touch when it's ready for some feedback. Good luck with your project as well :)

I am using Cloudways for past three years and I am very pleased with it.
I have heard about Siteground being another popular pick.

Cloudways has made it easier to install Wordpress. Basic things such as mapping domain, ssh access, ftp access, Installing and renewal of Letsencrypt SSL are well documented and UI is nice.

Support is also good - although they may not handhold you completely.

The drawback is CloudWays doesn't offer multiple SMTP email account creation . I use other email providers so that is non issue for me.

@meera I love your recommendation for Cloudways! I've already registered for a trial. And it claims to allow for staging env ❤️

Siteground has a sneaky practice of renewal (they significantly increase costs, and don't inform in front) as I understood from my research.

What email providers do you use?

Flywheel is superb in terms of simplicity and speed, if you're like the rest of us and would rather spend time on trying to make money than hosting a website.

I went for now with cloudways, and so far it's good!
My requirement was to launch multiple Wordpress instances without doubling cost.
But yeah I've learned that common knowledge is that Flywheel and WPEngine is top tier if you don't mind extra money.

      Thanks for your reply!

      Hey @hackerlatino!

Thank you for your recommendation, I started with Cloudways and I'm happy so far.
But I will note lightsail for the future!
