What are your general opinions, as Indie Hackers, on branding?

Hi IH community,

My name's Eduard, a Brand Designer & Strategist by trade. I have joined this platform not long ago, and I was amazed by the quality of the discussions here. I love the vibes, so, first of all, thanks for having me.

However, I couldn't help noticing that most discussions revolve around the mindset of rapid results, speed and quickly seeing an ROI. I've seen topics on marketing, business plans, product launches, and countless great ideas overall, but I didn't ever (yet) stumble across someone talking about branding.

So...I figured why not ask. I'm curious to know what is your opinion on this topic of branding and brand strategies overall? Is it something about the long-term results of it that put many entrepreneurs off during early days of starting something new? Or maybe you might think it's a bit of an abstract term that came to be glorified by the mainstream?

I am looking forward to hearing and discussing your unfiltered opinions on this. I am also the founder of my own branding studio that is looking to help passionate people such as yourselves, so if you have any questions whatsoever about this topic, I would be more than happy to answer any of them. I know there's a lot of idiotic information out there around this topic that can confuse pretty much anyone, so hopefully I might do a better job of setting some things straight.

Let's discuss!✌️

I think many IHs are still doing MVP or finding some traction so they are not ready to deal with branding, particularly when most of them have only an IT background.

I have some traction and I need to start doing marketing. I am working on branding now. I need to have a good branding and UI/UX to make sure that we don't lose the users when they come to our site when we start working on marketing.

I couldn't agree more on the MVP part. As I've said above, the IH community seems focused on developing early stages of products and then dealing with a more analytical approach to marketing when launching.

I rarely heard talk about branding, so I was genuinely curious how people here approach it. Glad to hear you're focusing on it. The UI should derive of course from the visual identity you have built, and the visual identity derives from a much larger brand strategy, so you can't really have one without the other if you're looking to get results out of it. UX is a totally different beast - equally important.
