What is your best tip for acquiring backlinks?

I am a developer who lacks SEO expertise (learning as fast and as much as I can).

There is so much chatter about the importance and relevance of backlinks in achieving high ranking in Search Engine results (Bing, Google, etc...).

However, It just seems like a daunting task to acquire external backlinks (have other sites link to mine) if I do not know or have any relationship with the other site owners.

Seems to me there is a fair amount of cajoling and convincing involved here. How does it work? What is the best approach to this? How do I go about building these relationships?

Note:

I realize that most of my competitors (similar sites) create fake sites and just put a landing page. Here is an example of a similar site (tutor dot com) with fake sites just for the purpose of creating backlinks to their main site

https://tutorsfc.net
69.0K backlinks to tutor dot com
https://tutorsfc.org
57.1K backlinks to tutor dot com

The practice does not seem ethical and may be frowned upon by crawlers.
What do you think? Any help?

Hey there! It's great that you're diving into the world of SEO and recognizing the importance of backlinks. Building quality backlinks can indeed be a challenge, especially when you're starting without established relationships. Here are some strategies to help you acquire backlinks and build relationships in the process:

    Create High-Quality Content:
Develop valuable and shareable content on your site. Quality content naturally attracts links from other websites. This could be in the form of blog posts, infographics, videos, or any other content relevant to your industry.

    Guest Blogging:
Identify reputable websites in your niche that accept guest posts. Contribute high-quality articles and include a link back to your site in the author bio. This not only provides a backlink but also exposes your content to a wider audience.

    Build Relationships in Your Industry:
Attend industry events, join forums, and participate in online communities related to your field. Engage with other professionals, share your expertise, and establish genuine connections. Over time, this can lead to opportunities for collaboration and backlinks.

    Broken Link Building:
Find broken links on other websites within your niche. Reach out to the site owner, notify them of the broken link, and suggest your content as a replacement. This is a win-win situation, as it helps them fix their site while providing you with a valuable backlink.

    Social Media Engagement:
Actively engage on social media platforms where your target audience and industry influencers are present. Share your content, participate in discussions, and connect with others. This can lead to organic backlinks as people discover and share your content.

    Build Linkable Assets:
Create resources that others in your industry would find valuable and link to naturally. This could be in the form of guides, tools, research, or any content that stands out and solves a problem for your audience.

    Skyscraper Technique:
Identify popular content in your industry, create something even better, and reach out to those who linked to the original content, letting them know about your improved version. This technique can help you replace existing backlinks with your upgraded content.

I personally use all these techniques to my website also

That's a pretty standard gray hat SEO technique. Google only really sees these as single referring domains, though, for most SEO purposes. Two more examples include http://livehomeworkhelp.net/ and http://homeworkpa.com/.

If you've got Ahrefs, check these sites out. They basically have zero actual link power to tutor.com. All have a domain rating of zero.

If you don't have Ahrefs, get Ahrefs, period. It will give you a wealth of useful information that will help you on your way to link build based on the tried and true techniques your competition have already tested for you.

These are the URLs you need to be worried about regarding linking out to tutor.com:
