I built a Chrome extension in 45 minutes without coding experience (using ChatGPT) 🤯

As the title suggests, I built a Chrome extension using ChatGPT (GPT-4) and Replit in 45 minutes.

I wanted to make an app that displays new marketing quotes with each new tab, for our members at ramenclub.so (and our general audience).

Full details in the post!

awesome man , even i made my tool called seamless GPT completely using ChatGPT.

The world of AI opens so many opportunities

  2. 2

It's definitely a great tool for coders

  3. 2

ChatGPT is really the best, congrats

    1. 1

For the right use case, it's pretty powerful

  4. 2

    Wow, love this!

  5. 2

    This is really neat.

  6. 2

Are you trying to monetize it or just release it for free to your community?

    1. 1

For now my plan is to 1. get it accepted by the Chrome Web Store 2. ship a bunch of v1.1 improvements and 3. launch it free for my target audience and community. If it looks like there's an opportunity for a freemium model in future, I'll consider it. But for now it's a form of side project marketing.

  7. 2

It is very nice AI is not coming slow.

    1. 1

Yeah something crazy is happening rn...

  8. 2

Awesome man I also use GPT-4 on a daily basis to improve the code for my own AI chatbot for iOS (https://apple.co/40oSG45). This tech is really ground breaking.

    1. 1

Love that. Yeah I think it's an exciting time to be building.

  9. 2

Super helpful - thanks for sharing the process Charlie!

Amazing Information. I really enjoyed reading this thread and discussion by the people. As someone who is involved in "Boots" for many years, I would like to refer https://www.workbootsweb.com/best-waterproof-work-boots/ . It’s not only focused on discussing the topic inside out but we have also compiled a list of the best waterproof work boots for various budgets. You won't need to search for more information if you visit my website.
Hope everybody enjoys reading the blog.

Thanks! I'll check your blog out.

    Nice little extension!
ChatGPT while not perfect is a good companion/helper. It’s not much different than Google in that regard, it’s just more efficient because it does what would for some be considered “heavy lifting”.

    1. 1

Thank you! Yes it's good for making micro-products quickly right now. But who knows what GPT-5 and a more mature plugins library will bring.

  12. 2

That's great. i also am building one from scratch using chatGPT itself. we are building something like back in the days delicious

    1. 1

Awesome - share when it's ready!

  13. 2

When ChatGPT first started, I told my team that it wouldn't threaten anyone's job, except for those who knew how to use this powerful tool effectively.

Now, everyone who is an expert in their niche is building useful and powerful tools, which previously required hours or months to complete projects. This AI is now helping to finish them in a much shorter time.

Wish you best of luck for your success!

    1. 1

Thanks sir. I think devs should consider leaning into it rather than resisting, as it has the capacity to make them more efficient in some ways.

  14. 2

The last time I tried building a chrome extension with GPT-3.5, it gives me functioning code, but the manifest version was 2, which will be deprecated in 2023.
Which version does GPT-4 give you, is it version 2 or 3?

        1. 1

          Share what you build!

          1. 2

I am building a chrome extension integrating ChatGpt APIs and will share about it, currently not completed. I have experience with chrome extensions because I have worked on chrome extension projects at my job.

  15. 2

AI is such a great tool, I think it can help people in nearly any use case. I think the only problem is that people don't know how to use it properly, if you do it saves a lot of time.
For example, my teams if using it for a variety of things, writing the first draft, finding ideas, coding faster, rephrasing stuff...

    It's a really exciting topic.

    1. 1

Yup - like a motorcycle for the mind.

  16. 2

did you do any product market research before building ?

    1. 1

Yes - I discuss in this part of the thread below.

Using the "make something people search for" framework, I checked Ahrefs to find relevant high volume keywords related to quotes that founders would find interesting - leading me to "Marketing Quotes". There was also nothing like this on the Chrome Web Store already. Is that what you meant?

  17. 2

That is awesome. I have generate a complete moded version of Instagram from Chat GPT that is https://theinstaproapk.com/. You can also utilize it for any purpose.

  18. 2

It's great to hear that you are enjoying this demonstration of the capabilities of ChatGPT.

    1. 1

      Thank you, I certainly am!

  19. 2

    great work , loving it

    1. 1

Thank you. It's been super fun to work on.

  20. 2

Love it, such a fun showcase of what ChatGPT can facilitate 👏

    1. 1

Thank you - I was kind of surprised when I hit 'Run' and the thing actually worked!

What was interesting was generating the code from ChatGPT was the easiest part. The harder part was things like exporting the files correctly then submitting to the Chrome Web Store.

  21. 1

Sounds neat! Let me know if you need an API for quotes. https://atomicquote.com/tag/marketing

    1. 1

I might do - what ya got?

      1. 2

I run the site https://atomicquote.com/ and have considered exposing a quote API. Let me know if that is something you would be interested in and how you would need it to work.

        1. 1

I'm interested. Mind shooting me a DM on twitter.com/charlierward?

  22. 1

    Is it possible to monetize?

    1. 3

Maybe the better question is "Should you monetize it?"

      It's a 45 min AI generated code...

      1. 2

My plan is to make it a free tool for our existing/future community members at ramenclub.so - there is work to do on it though for sure. I want to style it more nicely and add way more quotes, plus do a proper launch/marketing.

In future could we make a paid version? I wouldn't rule it out.

This version is not ready for that, for sure. I just wanted to prove I could do it. But I'd be careful dismissing other products that were made "too quickly" in your eyes, based entirely on how long they've previously taken. Certain simple products like this are now significantly faster to make.

    2. 1

Eventually maybe. But for now, I'm making it as a free tool to help founders.

  23. 1

Hi, just curious, do you have a plan of monetizing it? I am also planning to do a sort-of data mining chrome extension using ChatGPT.

    1. 1

Nope - I'm using it as a fun / helpful tool to help the members of and community I run - Ramen Club.

      1. 2

wow. I like the community name! Ramen Club! What is it about? I missed Japan Ramen, a lot!

        1. 1

Ramen Club is about helping bootstrappers reach ramen profitability, and beyond. Ramen profitable = the minimum profit your startup needs for you to survive off it. We have an online/IRL community, create content and build tools for founders! You should check us out at https://ramenclub.so

  24. 1

Love it, such a fun showcase of what ChatGPT can facilitate

    1. 1

Thank you - got a few more build in the works!

  25. 1

The app is still being reviewed by the Chrome Web Store, but you can have a sneak peak here: https://marketingquotes.studioramen.repl.co/ (you'll need to refresh to see each new quote, but in the final version, it'll be with each tab you open).

    1. 2

Great work! can you tell us the name of your app in Chrome? I will search for it when the reviewing is done.

      1. 1

"Marketing Quotes" - should be the only one in there.

The v1 is simple, just want to get it good enough to be submitted. Then I'll work on a big v1.1 update with better styling and way more quotes, than I'll do a big launch! Can't wait.

        1. 1

Any luck with the chrome store? I’ve used 3.5 twice now, and while I get some results, I’ve failed to get something intriguing enough to keep playing.

Maybe I just need to pay up for 4.0.
