Have I misunderstood something about how profiles work? 😊

I haven't been to indiehackers much the last couple of months, thought I'd come and check out what was going on today as it's been a while! Went to my user account and then I tried to click on my profile and was given the option to 'claim' my profile /blunicorn ....but that was already my profile so it was a bit confusing.

Then after that any time I go to the profile tab I keep being taken into some kind of profile-building interface, but I already have a profile and that information should already be populating it I would have thought? So now I'm scared to save anything in that interface if it's somehow erasing my old data, or creating me a whole new profile that supersedes my existing (long-time user with lots of posts and comments I ideally don't want to lose track of). Another example of this is it's like 'add your products' with only the option to add brand new products, but my product is already on here.

Anyway, it's all very confusing and now I'm worried about breaking something so want to check if these are bugs, and if not, am I just supposed to create all my profile data from scratch, or do I just not visit my profile tab ever again? :)

UPDATE FOR CLARITY:

A summary of things that make no sense:

  • I already had /blunicorn as my URL for like 5 years, why do I have to 'claim it', I already have/had it?
  • I already had my current product/project listed, but now I have to 'add projects' to my profile, but inexplicably I can't add my existing product so I'd have to create my existing product from scratch.
  • I already had my social media links in my old indiehacker data, now I have to add them from scratch, why?
  • I already had a bio, now I have to write a new one, why?

Literally the only thing that has been migrated is my profile image, but it was all structured data...where did it go? why wasn't it just migrated over for existing users? what is going on?

Hello @blunicorn! Your old profile is gone. It just had a bio and some posts that you pinned there. Now, you can add sections to your profile. Your old posts and comments aren't gone, visit your history and there is the old interface . To have a basic profile page, add just a "Bio" section and write in it (you can copy it from the old interface, at your history, under your username).
Test it out and have fun with it, you won't ruin anything! Have fun.

The new profile I'm asked to build is made up of lots of data that already existed in my old profile: social media handles, projects, bio - there's no reason those couldn't have been migrated over for existing users.

          Yeah, you are right.

Yo @blunicorn! Good feedback. You've returned right in the middle of our "IH Profiles" rollout, and we haven't yet gotten around to putting up a landing page (etc.) that explains how they work.

Here's the brass tax for now:

    • Your new IH Profile is not meant to replace your legacy profile page. You'll still have both, even after you claim your URL. Think of your IH Profile as a "presentation page" and think of your legacy profile as a "community member page."
    • IH Profiles are fully customizable and let you sit in the driver's seat of how to present your projects, writings, revenue, etc., to the outside world.
    • Legacy profile pages aren't customizable and aren't really meant to be presented to the outside world. They're effectively a log of past forum/website activity. You'll always be able to navigate there via blunicorn/history.

Still a work in progress. We'll probably allow users to import some legacy info to the new IH Profiles, but that's not a feature that made it into the MVP. We also might consider adding additional copy around the "Claim your new profile" button that clarifies you won't be losing your legacy community page? We'll see.

If I delete my new (currently blank) profile will it revert to the old view?

Having a profile is optional, but having a forum history page is not optional.

If you have a profile, then anyone who clicks your name on IH will be taken to your profile (with a link at the top that gives them the option to go view your forum history). If you don't have a profile, or if you had a profile but then deleted it, then anyone who clicks your name on IH will be taken to your forum history.

Awesome, thank you! I will remove it for now and re-enable when I have some time to add all my existing products in there. Thanks for all your hard work.

Hi @channingallen, thanks for chiming in. I think the changes overall seem really promising and I definitely applaud the intention, it will make a big difference for new user especially. Probably just bad timing to arrive right in the middle of the change, but it's quite disorientating and I guess I'm used to these sorts of changes being done in parallel with migrating mappable data from legacy accounts. I'll wait until the dust settles 🙂, though I do think in the 'add project' tile I should be able to add my own existing project if possible?

Yeah I'll add this, just didn't include it in the MVP bc wanted to release faster, and also get feedback on the UI/tools for putting together profiles. But it absolutely makes sense as a no-brainer feature to import products, bio info, avatar image, etc., to the new profile pages.

This also happened to me. I wish I could get a new profile with my old profile data in there already.

Lots of nice new UI in place though 🙌

Also just started getting back into IH and this confused me a lot lol.

What the issue with this I dont know

I don't get it either. Very confusing.

I agree with you, it is confusing to me too. Why not migrate the old profile to the new one with the extra features?? Not sure.
