The latest in the reddit debacle: Will they get extorted by hackers?
So the latest in the saga of reddit's colossal (IMO) f-up is that a hacker group is threatening to release 80 GB of internal reddit data if reddit doesn't give them $4.5MM and fix their API price changes.
I don't see reddit backing down. Should they?

It's not an option for Reddit give in to hackers like this.
If they do, there's no guarantee the hackers won't continue to make this same threat repeatedly in the future, whenever there's something they want. If it's a decision between the short-term pain of having customer data leaked, and the long-term pain of repeated threats of customer data leakage, you gotta go with the former.
It is not advisable for Reddit to back down and give in to the hackers' demands. By doing so, they would set a dangerous precedent and encourage the hackers to make similar demands in the future. There is no guarantee that meeting their demands once would prevent them from repeating the same threat. It is better to endure the short-term impact of potential data leaks than to face repeated threats and extortion attempts. Reddit should prioritize the long-term security and trust of its users and take necessary measures to enhance its security infrastructure.

Wouldn't negotiate, and would double down on the API prices. As any other stuff on life that is non essential. If people are not happy, just leave. Twitch for example could give a f if viewers or streamers are unhappy with the platform. People will complain but will continue to come back.
i think its f*cking crazy Reddit had to mess their damn API prices too. Not that a hacker group should do that, but still

No shot. Huffman has already stated that he wouldn't negotiate with mods. The same will hold true with the hackers.
