How long of a free trial is enough?

Im building Tuel.io, a service that sends daily custom SMS based on a users personal goals, as well as prompts for gratitude and journaling.

My plan was to offer a free 30 day trial, but then I thought maybe that is overkill, and so I’m curious if anyone has experience offering 14 or 21 day trials? There is a cost to each of the trials, so I am trying to be as efficient as possible since this is bootstrapped.

Alternatively, I could offer a free forever plan with very limited features for about the same price per year as a 30 day trial. Personally I lean towards the idea of having users pay earlier to validate the product, but I’m very open to input.

One other thought. My guess is that many will say that a trial should be just long enough to convince someone to pay. Of course, but that is product dependent. So in this case, with the short description above, and knowing the users will be getting daily product engagement via SMS, what would you do?

Thanks everyone!

You can have like a 2-5 free SMS per day and if somebody wants more they can go on to your subscription model. One thing i have learned through my research for SaaS products is they all have a free model. A limited one but they do give a permanant free model which can help you get audience. People else might just abuse the 30 day trial period.
