Amazon is building a “magical” AR/VR product

Even though I'm a technologist and coder by trade, I'm getting really tired of all the discussion about the metaverse and the internet. I don't want to live in some VR/AR world anymore. People are all already heads down everyday in their phones, and when you look around in the public square it's as if everyone is in their own world and not cognizant of each other.

Even though VR/AR technology is interesting, when is there going to be a discussion about the social implication of introducing this technology. It's possible we're moving forward when it comes to these technological advancement, but we're going moving backwards socially by adopting them.

I want to see technology continue to improve, but there needs to be some concern for the ethical implications of it as well. When everyone is fully ingrained in the digital world, it does seem to have some impact on a person's ability to empathize with other people in the real world.

I completely agree with you th3marine, we honestly need to step back a bit and revaluate where we are heading towards.

We live in a finite world (as long as we're stuck in this solar system), with finite resources. VR essentially creates an infinite world for us to live in. We can meet in VR instead of polluting our way across the globe. We can "own" and use virtual objects instead of objects made out of finite atoms mined in Australia, reshaped in China and finally sent on a boat across the Pacific. We can have deep experiences that rival anything the world of atoms can provide. We can actually be MORE social in VR, because the cost of meeting and hanging out is zero. I don't see it as dystopian. What's dystopian is 7 billion people all living the American dream while the planet dies. I don't think we'll completely stop living in the real world, but I hope VR can alleviate some of the problems we're facing along side the transition to renewable energy, electrification and other environmental technologies.

The two things I'm looking forward to with AR/VR are:

      1. A zoom replacement for collaborative remote work (a spacial component vs a grid of faces)
      2. Workstation flexibility (use it as my external monitor anywhere I want to work)

Other than that, I 100% agree and want to spend time living my real life, having real experiences with my family and friends.

Just because a huge corporation is hiring people for a something, doesn't mean that thing will be a good product/market fit for you :)

Let's quit our jobs altogether and go full-time Web 3, bitcoin, AR/VR, crypto, gaming, blockchain, NFTs, ethereum...

Wow, is it people shaped like bowling pins?

I mean no disrespect, but most VR/AR solutions look like crap.

I don't know why it's so difficult to pay some indie devs to come up with graphics and narratives that don't suck.

I'm an AR/VR maximalist, meaning I'd like to see it replicating reality to the point where you can't tell the difference. But I have a hunch this is just another gimmick where you can put products from Amazon in your cart or some other boring corporate wishy wash.

All tech advancements are good and great even that they make our life easier. But at the end of the day I want to live in the real world and make connections with people and not avatars. I could be wrong lets see 📽

9 times out of 10 if you notice a trend and jump on it early it will fizzle away for the next hot topic. But occasionally a trend becomes widely adopted and being a first mover can put you in a very pretty position.
