Figma - For Designers or Developers?

I'm currently attending Config 2023 and the team released several new features! Those include:

→ Dev Mode, making dev work in Figma easier
→ Variables to streamline your design systems with tokens and theming
→ Advanced prototyping to create realistic prototypes in fewer steps
→ Auto layout updates including wrapping and min/max
→ Font picker
→ An updated file browser

A popular designer (Brett from Design Joy) tweeted that Figma is becoming "too complex", creating features that don't help designers "be more creative", and focusing on "making us more like developers".

It's an interesting take, and from a designer's perspective, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Is Figma pushing designers to design/think more like devs? If so, is this a bad thing? Are these features actually beneficial to your design work in any way?

I'm glad that Figma is getting so many cool updates, and I think they're necessary to keep them on top of the game. We just need to adapt. As a UI designer, I think it's obvious that my role will evolve even more over time.

I hear you! I definitely think it is pushing designers to adapt/expand their skill set, but exposing us to more developer tools. On the flip side, I also get designers who aren't necessarily aiming to think technically (i.e. graphic designers, no-code web designers) may feel like the tool is less focused on their creative needs.
