I know it’s a broad question but I'm interviewing several developers this week to accelerate my project. What are some of the skills, hard and soft, you look for in a developer that makes them stand out? How do you categorize those skills into a pricing category? Have you worked with the same developer over a long time?
Heard a great saying the other say - hire butterflies, not caterpillars.
I had the privilege of leading several (small) product teams.
I never hired myself, nor built teams from scratch. I was always brought in to coordinate as a tech lead with the team already composed.
I was lucky to find people who wanted to do a good job: I believe you can teach technical things, but cannot help anybody become a good fit for the team if they weren't in the first place.
You can set a minimum bar for technical skills, of course. But I wouldn't risk it with soft skills. Those are people you need to trust and collaborate with. That is unless you want a team to micromanage, but I don't recommend it.
This will probably feel a bit hippie but try to feel people. A good way to do it would be to work on a small project together and see how it goes.
