Sheryl Sandberg stepping down as Meta COO

"I am so immensely proud of everything this team has achieved. The businesses we’ve helped and the business we've built. The culture we've nurtured together." —Sheryl Sandberg

After more than 10 years with Facebook/Meta, Sheryl Sanberg is stepping down.

What a run. Love her or hate her, she was arguably the key mind that transformed Facebook into the world's top social media company.

    Zuck's take:

"When Sheryl joined me in 2008, I was only 23 years old and I barely knew anything about running a company. We’d built a great product — the Facebook website — but we didn’t yet have a profitable business and we were struggling to transition from a small startup to a real organization. Sheryl architected our ads business, hired great people, forged our management culture, and taught me how to run a company. She created opportunities for millions of people around the world, and she deserves the credit for so much of what Meta is today.”

So many people tend to focus on CEOs/founders of big startups-turned-corps and ignore the role of the CTO/etc. This letter just proves how important Sheryl Sandberg was to what FB is today.

@zerotousers What exactly is Facebook today?

I've been off FB for a while and feel Meta's head-first dive into the metaverse was a big mistake. I genuinely don't see much value at all being created via AR in the way Meta is envisioning the future. I don't want another world that's full of ads and bullshit.

Meta and FB are heading toward the dumpster. She got out at the right time.

Well i guess she will have a new journey nw which her huge success. I don't know if you too have noticed that but i can feel that meta previously Facebook is having a lot of updates (more than usual). Idk maybe i'm wrong but that's my feeling.

Sheryl Sandberg is an inspiration to women and moms. Her book LeanIn is so spot on what we the working women and mothers face.

I heard she build a solid team of rock stars in Facebook.

I hate it when an iconic figure leaves.

One take that I recently read summarized it perfectly.

"Sandberg is one of the faces of the company that for many has come to represent the exploitation of people’s privacy and the hubris of the technology industry."

Her book Lean In was super influential and I'm certain it inspired a generation of women and girls to seek leadership. And that is awesome. However, her tie to a company that's mired in countless controversies will ultimately taint her legacy.

Regardless, she is clearly a business genius and changed the world with her ideas. Was it changed for the better though?

Well said. I don't believe it was changed for the better -- quite the contrary. Just goes to show that "success" is nothing if it comes at such a high cost. It is not enough to pursue success, we must as entrepreneurs pursue a positive impact, and that means having a sense of ethics and the ability to be honest about the impact the things we do on the world. She, like so many in the business and tech world, lacked that human capacity, or at the very least, repressed it greatly. That's the old model of "business leadership," a remnant of the boomer generation's values. We need a new model, one that is wholistic, not narcissistic.

I loved her book Lean In. She helped inspire me to be more confident and to understand that I'm worthy of being at the table voicing my ideas.

Also, it's OK to not be liked by everyone. People-pleasing can be such an emotional and mental challenge. When you're OK with not being liked, it can be clarifying and empowering.
