What's the value of a founder interview podcast anyway?

Hi folks. I'm wondering, for those who love founder interview podcasts, what is the main value you get out of them?

What value do you actually get out of founder interview podcasts?
  1. Inspiration
  2. How-to (Like, what steps did they take to go from A to B?)
  3. Key resource mentions
  4. Judgment (what calls did they make in situations like mine?)
  5. Host/guest dynamic (jokes, etc)

The first two choices - inspo and how-to's - I also like learning which tools were used to build the product.

For me it is mainly to learn how they got from A to B. Inspiration plays its part too.

How might a podcast interview be better than an article written by the guest themselves on how they got from A to B?

I like the Judgment option. Listening to podcasts of other founders helps me contextualize all the information I have to take in to build this thing.

For me, it's a common distraction to listen to other founders who took a different path than I'm on. Maybe they had a VC-backed startup or founded a company with other co-founders. There's nothing wrong with those approaches, but they don't entirely apply to the app I'm working to bootstrap as a solo dev/marketer.

So I like listening to the other indie hackers that were solo and started small, so I can help understand their judgement that got them from startup to actually making some amount of money.

Would you suggest that I make sure the interviews have a certain 'stage' of listener in mind, or try over the main ones (startup, traction, growth) in the interviews?

  4. 2

I would say no. 2 and 3. are similar.

For me, it's actually none of these lol. I sometimes listen to these podcasts to see how the founders got on so I can eventually get featured as well for more exposure.

But I do sometimes also take inspiration. Do you know any good podcasts for SaaS startups? I'm currently working on Evoke and would love some inspiration from a SaaS startup.

Should be fairly straight forward to get on a podcast. If you're new to being a guest, get involved with people who are 'just starting' (e.g. less than 1 season) so you can get some practice. It doesn't matter if you say the same thing on another show later.

The worst thing, as a podcast host, is having an untrained guest who rants. It takes some familiarity with the process, getting over the nerves, etc, to be a good guest.

Just email hosts, tell them who you are, what you can talk about (suggest 3 relevant topics).

Thanks for the advice! Hopefully, with AI stuff booming, there'll be some good new AI podcasts to get on.

I like hearing how ordinary some of the people are - it makes me believe I can do it to too. I used to think, "maybe I can make an extra 100 a month"; now I'm confident that I could make a living at this if I work hard enough.

Super interesting. I hadn't thought of that dynamic before!

Options 1, 2 and 3. I could vote only for the first one. Strange how no one voted option 3.
