How to rank for 1 keyword in organic search? Don't know where to start!

Hi All,

I have a very high level (basic) understanding of SEO.

What are some practical steps to rank my site for its first keyword?

I have used google keyword planner and have a list of prospective low competition high/low/mid volume keywords.

Say I was to pick a really low competition keyword (i.e. 10 searches a month) how can I rank even low down on google?

Is it just a case of building more and more targeted content around that specific content?

Or should I focus on backlink generation?

I have no budget to hire a specialist - is there some SEO wizardry I need to learn?

How did you get your first keyword on your project?

My site is focused on one key app/calculator and I do a few blogs here and there when ideas come to me, but its not really the crux of the site & i'd rather be focused on improving the calculator/adding more tools.

For reference my site is a UK based full life financial independence calculator:

You should think of topics, not keywords. Find a topic (close to your core business prop) for which you want to rank. From that topic, you should look at sub-topics or keywords that are specific enough for you to rank on. Start writing and continue writing articles about adjacent sub-topics - so that Google starts recognizing you as having topical authority in that space. Be patient, SEO is a medium-long term game.
